The windshield will help because it sets up a bit of a pressure wave in front of the bike which deflects and thus moderates to a certain degree the gust slamming into the bike.
I assume that you were hit by a cross wind situation.
Our scoots are not to light for highway running but as with every motorcycle - you have to relax into a different level of attention when out on the highways and at those kind of speeds constantly.
I believe that this kind of issue is discussed during Motorcycle Safety Rider's Courses which I just know you have taken! (Don't we all need those and refreshers as well?)
So put the windshield on - cruise the highways - but do not get to relaxed when you are at speed - the virtual cage that protects you on a bike is only of your own creation through your attentive riding style
